Bacground: Cervical epidural injection (CEI) is commonly performed manage neck and upper extremity pain, generally using steroid and/or local anesthetics. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of single CEI of steroid with or without local anesthetic in patients with cervical radicular pain.
Methods: A total of 64 patients were randomly assigned to receive CEI with either dexamethasone alone (n = 30, D group) or combined with local anesthetic (n = 34, D + LA group). At 2 weeks and 3 months post-treatment, Roland 5-point pain scale scores were then analyzed to assess outcomes.
Results: Improvement shown by both groups following the procedure. The number of improvement was observed in 20/30 patients (66.6%) and 21/34 patients (61.8%) at 2 week in D group, and D + L/A group, respectively, following the procedure. And there were no significant differences between both groups. Three months after CEI, higher portion of improve results was observed D + LA group (76.5%) than D group (56.6%).
Conclusions: In this study, CEI performed using with local anesthetics had longer pain relief than without local anesthetic on cervical radicular pain.
